Verity

This movie is not worth too many words or worth too much time. You've probably already seen the rotten tomato score (34% at the time of this post). IMDB has it at 61/100, keep in mind this is an Amazon Studios movie that owns IMDB. No conflicts there.

I've read the book so I had low expectations going into the movie. I was impressed how they managed to take a book that was "umm, duh" at best into a movie that is such a snooze fest at.

From the opening scene with the guy being hit by a car and blood all over Lowen to the final murder scene, it felt like a tv movie where there were never any stakes to be lost. And they took that momentum and never let off the brakes from there.

The forced podcast scenes were cringe. Please don't do that again.

Even with a nude Dakota Johnson and Anne and Dakota making out, the chemistry between the cast was the only stiff thing in the theatre. Every scene felt slow like they started a scene and allowed the actor to breathe, say their lines, then breathe some more. A breathe of fresh air for the viewer to check their phone within each scene.

If you told me they didn't have a script before or during shooting I wouldn't be surprised. If you told me that this movie cost $40 million, I'd be surprised. From the book to the movie, they took creative liberties of changing the house to create a sense of suspense that never happened. They changed the season from spring/summer to winter and the cold was felt from the pacing to the interaction between the actors.

The movie isn't totally irredeemable. It's also boring. I don't want to spend too much time here. It's not thrilling, not romantic, not suspenseful, and nor anything it promises to be.
